Shadow Minister for Child Protection and the Prevention of Family Violence, SA Senator Kerrynne Liddle, today intervened to shut down social media accounts featuring violent recordings from Ceduna and other locations in South Australia.
Social media posts sharing footage of multiple street fights between young women and men in Ceduna in the past month are an absolute disgrace, the Senator for South Australia said.
“The right action for every single individual of the account’s more than 700 followers was to raise this with the authorities and seek its removal – not condone the actions via following it,” Senator Liddle said.
“One account features about 25 recordings of young women and men fighting on the streets and sport fields, in buses, front yards and school grounds since January 16,” she said.
“This violence is abhorrent but also a catalyst for escalating violence through retaliation.”
Senator Liddle said SA Police, Empowering Communities and Aboriginal community leadership appear to be missing in action in shutting down the site and stopping anti-social and violent behaviour in Ceduna.
Senator Liddle said the number of videos and followers has increased steadily since the account was first created in mid-January.
“Ceduna is a community with a significant number of Commonwealth programs so why haven’t key organisations who have received funding to improve lives, leadership and frontline organisations intervened to shut this down,” she said.
“I reached out to the e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant yesterday to have the pages removed from social media and to educate key organisations about their role in helping to do so.
“Violence has reached an epidemic level in Australia. It costs communities in so many ways and is not acceptable – in any circumstances. “Ending domestic and family violence is the responsibility of everyone in a community.
“Violent behaviour is occurring far too regularly, not only in Ceduna but in other regional communities in South Australia and across our nation.”
“This appalling behaviour must be stopped and it is everyone’s business to stop it.”
